The stands were packed Friday night at Beckman High as an estimated 1,700 fans showed up for a Pacific Coast League boys basketball game between Beckman and Woodbridge. Beckman won 43-40.

Fans, who were admitted free, were encouraged to donate money to the Orange Coast College Baseball Foundation in memory of OCC baseball coach John Altobelli, his wife Keri and daughter Alyssa who were killed in the helicopter crash more than a week ago. Lakers star Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna were also killed.

The idea came about from Athletic Director Steve Fischel and basketball coach John Goins, who wanted to support Sissy Oberlin, athletic secretary at Beckman who is also the sister of John Altobelli.

Boxes were set up near the entrance and a significant amount of money was donated, although the figures were not known Friday night.

It was also senior night for the Beckman players and a pre-game ceremony was held to honor the seniors.
