University’s boys basketball team topped Tarbut V’ Torah 75-52 Monday to advance to Tuesday’s finals in the Charlie Wilkins Memorial Tournament at Westminster High School.
TVT held a 13-12 lead after one quarter in a contest featuring two Irvine-based teams just two miles apart. The Trojans forced nine second quarter turnovers by the Lions to take a 39-27 halftime lead. University went on a 10-0 run to open up a 22-point lead in the first two minutes of the third quarter. TVT did cut the lead to 12 points, but that’s as close as the Lions got.
Senior guard Ari Varon led TVT (4-5) with 27 points and six 3-pointers. Junior guard Ori Maya contributed nine points, all on 3-pointers.
Nader Chalan was leading scorer for University (4-11). The junior guard had 24 points, nine rebounds (five offensive) and four assists while going 9-of-10 from the line.
Junior center Abdallah Shami had another double-double with 14 points and 17 rebounds (10 offensive) plus seven assists and seven steals. Sophomore guard Yousuf Chalan scored 11 points and corralled seven rebounds (five offensive).
