OC Sports Zone: Community First

Saturday sports: JSerra boys basketball team wins; IVC and UCI squads also victorious

BOYS BASKETBALL

JSERRA 45, RANCHO CHRISTIAN 44: The Lions improved their record to 10-4 overall with a nonleague victory Saturday night.

Robert Diaz scored 15 points and Everett Bryson 13 points and Aidan Fowler eight points to lead JSerra.

ORANGE LUTHERAN 63, SERVITE 52: The Lancers captured a Trinity League victory Saturday. Cameron Potter scored 21 points, Blake Brewer had 13 points and David Manea nine points to lead Orange Lutheran (11-6, 1-2).

Mile Song had 16 points, Tyler Small 13 points and Al-Amin Juma 10 points to lead Servite (12-2, 1-1).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

ALISO NIGUEL 52, ESPERANZA 49: The Wolverines captured a victory at the Matt Denning Nike Hoops Classic. Shanna Brown had 28 points and 21 rebounds, Aryanna Hudson had 10 points and five assists and Katie Dunakin had six points and 10 rebounds to lead Aliso Niguel (6-13).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

IRVINE VALLEY COLLEGE 65, PALOMAR 45: The Lasers, ranked No. 8 in the state, defeated No. 3 Palomar at IVC. Morgan Higgins scored 24 points and had five assists to lead IVC. Paola Roa, Jessica Surour and Sarah Matossian each had 11 points for the Lasers.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

UC IRVINE 68, UC RIVERSIDE 51: Collin Welp took over the second half to lead the Anteaters to a 68-51 victory over UC Riverside in the Big West opener at the SRC Arena. 

Welp made 1 of 7 field goals in the first half, then in the second half went 10 for 10 and 5 for 5 from the free throws line to end up with 30 points, one point shy of his career high.

Austin Johnson added a season-high 16 points for UCI.

It was UCI’s first game in 18 days. UCI hosts UC San Diego Tuesday at 7 at the Bren Center.
