SANTA ANA COLLEGE UPDATE: Men’s soccer team captures win with late goal

Bryan Oseguera put away the go ahead goal in the 56th minute of Santa Ana’s Orange Empire Conference match against Irvine Valley to help the No. 16 ranked Dons pick up a 2-1 win.

The midfielder’s first goal of the season couldn’t have come at a better time as the Dons needed a win to get themselves back in the mix of the OEC standings.

Kevin Ruiz also came up clutch for the Dons as he knocked in a ball from Felipe Sanchez III in the 36th minute to tie the score a 1-1.

Before that, the IVC Lasers had all the momentum, getting off shot after shot until Max Kleinhammes put a header in the net off a corner kick in the eighth minute.

Frank Aguilar had another solid match with five saves in 90 minutes while his counter part Nathan King recorded three saves in the same amount of time.

The win gives Santa Ana their first in OEC play, pushing them up two spots in the standings.

FOOTBALL TEAM FALLS TO WEST LOS ANGELES 56-28

Defense continues to be a challenge for the Santa Ana football team as the Dons gave up 56 points in a loss to West LA on Saturday afternoon.

SAC (2-4, 1-1) lmited the Wildcats’ passing game, allowing just 88 yards and a touchdown in the air. But the damage was done on the ground, as West LA (4-30, 3-0) had three players rush for over 100 yards, combining for 437 yards to win 56-28.

Kenny Phillips returned from injury to lead the Dons in tackles with 10 including a sack. In addition, Chris Hert had eight tackles and a forced fumble while Garrett Hawkins recorded seven tackles.

Santa Ana’s offense was led by Cross Faletoi who threw for a season high 259 yards and four touchdowns. Freshman receiver Tyler Shimomura was his top target, going for six catches, 110 yards and two touchdowns. Indiana Taylor also had an exceptional game with five receptions, 89 yards and a touchdown.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL TEAM LOSES TO SADDLEBACK

Santa Ana College volleyball got back to Orange Empire Conference play by hosting Saddleback College on Wednesday night. SAC was defeated 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-21) to fall to 4-11, 1-6 on the season.

The Dons found themselves down by a sizable margin in the first set unti Ally Wardlow’s tough serves led them on a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 21-17. But Saddleback’s Ireland Ridill put away a kill on her next attempt to stop the bleeding. SAC continued to fight but dropped the set by a score of 25-19.

Saddleback relied on that momentum to gain control early in the second set, leading to a 2-0 (25-19, 25-14) advantage for the Gauchos.In the third, Santa Ana used another big run to mount to comeback midway through the set.

Myrandah Zepedea ecorded three kills in a 9-0 span that put the Dons up 15-12. But the Dons couldn’t sustain that energy, giving the Gauchos a chance to recoup with their own run to win the set 25-21.

WOMEN’S SOCCER TEAM LOSES TO GOLDEN WEST COLLEGE

Opportunities came early and often for the Santa Ana College women’s soccer team as they hosted the Golden West Rustlers (5-5-2, 2-3-1) on Friday. But the No. 16 ranked Dons (7-5-0, 1-5-0) failed to cash in them, resulting in a 2-1 loss.

The Dons started from behind after the Ana Sofia Rodriguez scored first for the Rustlers in the 32nd minute.

Just a few minutes later, Leyna Wood put away her 14th goal of the season to even things up on a pass from Ariana Figueroa in the 36th minute.
