Beckman High School’s football team evened its record at 1-1 with a 48-7 non-league victory over Savanna Friday night at Tustin.

The Patriots were led by Jonathan Sandoval, who rushed for 187 yards on 13 carries and scored four touchdowns.

The defense was led by Siale Tamotuu, who had eight tackles, one tackle for a loss and a quarterback pressure.

“We showed a ton of improvement from week one to week two and played a very complementary game,” said Beckman Coach Marcello Giuliano.

“The offense ran the ball well all night against a heavy box and created several explosive plays. Aside from one significant breakdown, the defense played very sound and created several tackles for loss and two interceptions.”

“The real difference in the game was our special teams. On the kickoff team, Christian Taylor recovered a fumble on the 2-yard line that set up our second score. Dominic Thompson returned a kickoff for a TD in the third quarter to regain the momentum of the game. The special teams provided a third score when Andres Pineda blocked a punt and Lucas Morgan scooped and scored with it.”

Giuliano said he appreciated the support of the students.

“It was a great game in a great atmosphere; our student body showed up in force to pack our stands in the debut of our new student section, the ‘Beckman Brigade.’ The whole campus worked to create a terrific game night experience, and we are fired up to continue to build on it,’ he said.

Beckman will host Calvary Chapel Friday at 7 at Tustin.

“Next week we’ll have our hands full with Calvary Chapel,” Giuliano said. “Their QB is probably the most impactful single player we’ve seen so far, and we’ll have to be on our A-game to keep him from taking over the game,” he said.

It’s also homecoming for Beckman.
