OC Sports Zone: Community First

Ocean View, Beckman, Woodbridge, Villa Park, Westminster, Fullerton, Foothill, Tesoro and Servite win

OCEAN VIEW 10, KATELLA 0: The Seahawks (16-6, 6-0) inched closer to the Golden West League title. Spencer Johnson pitched five shutout innings and Seahawks pitchers allowed just three hits. Ethan Eisen came in to pitch the final two innings.

Caleb Hohman was 3 for 3 with two RBI, a home run and three runs scored, Mulivai Levu was 2 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI, James Legg was 2 for 3 with two RBI and two runs scored, Ethan Eisen was 2 for 3 with three RBI and two runs scored and Dylan Simonds was 2 for 3 with an RBI to lead Ocean View offensively.

BECKMAN 14, NORTHWOOD 3: The Patriots (14-5) were led offensively by Nick McLain, Ashton Kanegae, Paul Murrow, and Cade McGuire, who all had multiple hit days, according to Beckman Coach Kevin Lavalle.

“Murrow and McLain homered, but the real star of the day was senior Nick Roghair, who homered in the sixth inning,” Lavalle said.

Lucas Welch, Gio Sambito, Isaac Morales, and Keon Ghazimorad pitched for Beckman. Welch (4-2) got the victory.

WOODBRIDGE 4, IRVINE 2: The league-leading Warriors (15-3) completed a sweep of the Pacific Coast League series with Irvine (11-9). Jack Bunnell notched his fourth victory of the year without a loss and lowered his ERA to 1.11 with a complete game, striking out seven.

Dylan Blakey had four hits including a double and a triple and an RBI, Connor Tallakson had two hits including a double and an RBI, Jaden Hoang-Tieu had two hits and an RBI, Nathan Perry had two hits and a stolen base and Brandon Abernathy and Luke DeVries each had a hit and a single.

“I continue to be very happy with the competitive nature that our team continues to display,” said Woodbridge Coach Ryan Brucker. “Today was a good team win vs. a really good Irvine team that has been playing well. We executed our offense well.  Dylan Blakey had  a really good approach at the plate and it resulted in a big day. Connor Tallakson and Jaden Hoang-Tieu came up with a couple of clutch hits that proved to be the difference.

“Jack Bunnell went the distance and did a great job mixing pitches, keeping Irvine off balance. He continues to perform at a really high level.”

JC Allen and Sam Dimaculanan were both 2 for 3 with a run scored and a double for Irvine, according to Coach Gabriel Cota. Bryan Wilhelm was 1 for 3 with an RBI for the Vaqueros.

Woodbridge also captured Thursday’s game 4-3.

VILLA PARK 4, EL MODENA 1: The Spartans (19-4) got a strong pitching performance from Benny Vogel, who pitched six innings, allowing three hits and striking out five. Vogel improved his record to 6-1. Aaron Perez recorded the save. Gavin Grahovac was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI, Jack Burke was 2 for 3 with an RBI and Zach Brown was 1 for 2 with an RBI.

WESTMINSTER 6, SEGERSTROM 5: The Lions (3-15, 3-3) remained in contention for a CIF playoff berth with a walk-off victory in a Golden West League game Friday at Westminster. Fonzi Ramirez led the Lions with seven strong innings on the mound. Issac Bueno, Chente Avalos, Gerry Rangel, Ethan Desanti and Jacob Rodriguez all went 3 for 4 for Westminster. The game was tied 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning. With the bases loaded, Rylan Chastain was hit by a pitch to score Zeke Hernandez and the Lions players poured onto the field to celebrate.

It was the second game the Lions have played without their former head coach Craig Jones, who resigned this week for personal reasons. Coach Christian Bedolla and Coach Pancho Avalos are running the team for the rest of the season.

FULLERTON 7, SUNNY HILLS 3: Sebastian Fanny homered, pitched four run scoreless innings striking out three and had three RBI to lead the Indians to a Freeway League victory Friday at Sunny Hills.

Fanny belted a solo HR in the third inning to give the Indians a 2-0 lead. He later added an RBI single and was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Fullerton added 4 runs in the sixth inning to stretch the lead to 7-2.

The Indians improved to 8-4 in league (and 13-9 overall) and are tied with La Habra for second place in league. The Lancers fell to 4-8-1 and 12-13 and are fourth in league. Both teams have critical series next week with playoff spots on the line.   

Fullerton finishes its regular season with three games next week against first-place Sonora. Sunny Hills completed the regular with three games against La Habra.

FOOTHILL 16, CANYON 0: The Knights (20-3, 2-0) won their 20th game and remain tied for first place in the Crestview League. Brady Ashworth pitched four innings, allowing no earned runs, no hits and struck out four for Foothill. Austin Overn was 2 for 3 with a double, two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base; Aiden Taurek was 2 for 3 with two RBI and a stolen base, Pedro Hernandez was 2 for 3 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI, Brady Schrank was 2 for 3 with two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base and Ramon Ramirez was 2 for 3 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI to lead Foothill’s 19 hit attack.   

TESORO 5, CAPISTRANO VALLEY 3: Zach Grudynski was 2 for 4 with two RBI, Kamden CIsneros was 1 for 3 with two RBI and Jackson Freenan was outstanding in relief, striking out four in 4 2/3 innings to lead the Titons (12-11, 4-2). 

SERVITE 4, MATER DEI 1: The Friars (11-10, 4-5) took the Trinity League series with a win in game three. Jonathan Rodriguez pitched six innings, allowing one run. He gave up three hits and struck out three. PJ Wendler got the save. Auggie Gutierrez had two RBI and Roman Martin and Mike Santos had one RBI each.

UNIVERSITY 3, PORTOLA 1: Bobby Bangs was 1 for 2 and Jackson Zambo 1 for 3 for University in the Pacific Coast League game. Luke Shen was 2 for 3 and Lucas Marinelli 1 for 2 with a double and an RBI for Portola. Aidan Russell pitched 5 2/3 innings allowing three hits and one earned run for the Bulldogs. University pitcher Alex Qu allowed just three hits.
