Mike Stewart named new offensive coordinator for Northwood High football team

Long-time Northwood High football assistant coach Mike Stewart has been named new offensive coordinator and quarterback coach for the Timberwolves, Coach Paige Nobles said Tuesday.

Nobles said that Zach Couey, who replaced Dan Selway as offensive coordinator, decided not to join the program this season. Selway joined Coach Sean Curtis staff as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Capistrano Valley High School.

“Even though replacing someone like Coach Couey with his offensive mindset, enthusiasm and just his overall knowledge of the game was going to be difficult I feel I have found a great candidate to take over the reigns as our newest offensive coordinator and quarterback coach,” Nobles said.

Nobles said that Stewart also “brings excellent offensive knowledge, enthusiasm, discipline and dedication to our program. This coach has been on our staff previously working as a position coach, and he was also one of the many reasons why our frosh/soph team went undefeated last season as their head coach. He is also on staff here at Northwood working with our student-athletes as a mentor and guidance teacher.

“I feel very fortunate to be working so closely with Coach Stewart. Coach Stewart has already taken the reigns of his new positon and seeing the excitement in his eyes and voice makes me feel Coach Stewart was the right coach for the job.”

Nobles added that Couey is welcome to return to the Northwood program in the future.
