La Habra and JSerra advance to regional title games; Trabuco loses in semifinals

LA HABRA 11, LANCASTER 1: La Habra, the top seeded team in the CIF Southern California Regional Division V Baseball Championships, opened with a victory at home in the semifinals Thursday. The Highlanders had a first round bye.

La Habra was led by Matt Coats who was 1 for 2 with four RBi and two runs scored. He also pitched six innings, striking out eight and allowed one earned run to improve his record to 9-2. The game was called after six innings due to the mercy rule.

Jesse Flores was 2 for 3 with two runs scored, Adrian Diaz was 1 for 2 with three RBI and Josh Castillo was 2 for 3 with a run scored to lead La Habra offensively.

“Great team win,” said La Habra Coach Jack Brooks. “It starts with Matt Coats on the mound and we played really well offensively. We had a bunch of quality at bats.”

La Habra (24-10) moves on to face No. 2 Christian Unified from San Diego Saturday at 2 p.m. in the regional championship game at La Habra.

“Sets up another huge game on Saturday against a strong San Diego section team with a bunch of DI commits,” Brooks said. “We are really looking forward to the challenge.” 

La Habra won the CIF Division 6 title Saturday defeating Elsinore 8-3. Click here for video, game story and photos.

JSERRA 4, ORANGE LUTHERAN 2: JSerra, which was the CIF Division 1 runner-up, advanced into the Division I finals with a victory over its Trinity League rivals Thursday in the regional semifinals at JSerra.

JSerra (29-7) will host No. 5 Ayala Saturday at noon in the regional championship game.

LA COSTA CANYON 4, TRABUCO HILLS 2: Trabuco Hills, the CIF Division 2 runner-up, lost in the semifinals of the Division II regional Thursday at Trabuco Hills.

Drew Barrett was 3 for 4 with a home run, double and an RBI, Garrett Strenger was 2 for 3, Mason Molina was 1 for 3 with a run scored and Nick Perez was 1 for 3 with an RBI to lead Trabuco Hills offensively.

Danny Suarez pitched the first four innings, striking out three and allowing four hits. Mason Molina, the ace of the Mustangs, staff, finished up and struck out two and allowed no earned runs.

Trabuco Hills (25-10) opened the regional tournament with a 9-1 victory over El Camino Real Tuesday.
