It’s a big night of high school basketball in OC as league titles and playoff berths are on the line

Cypress boys basketball team hosts Tustin Friday night at 6 p.m.

It’s a big night of high school basketball in Orange County as local teams try to clinch a share of their league titles or outright crowns on the final Friday night of the regular season.

CIF playoff berths are also on the line.

These are some of the games of high interest:

Tustin at Cypress boys basketball: This one is at 6 p.m. and the Centurions, undefeated in league, are hoping to clinch a share of the Empire League title, which would be their second in a row.

It will be Military Appreciation night with a ceremony taking place at about 5:45 p.m.

“If we are able to beat Tustin on Friday, we are guaranteed a share of the league title,” said Coach Derek Mitchell. “If we win on Friday and on Tuesday, Jan. 29 (senior night at Cypress), we will clinch outright, have our second 10 game win streak of the season, and break the school record for wins with 25.”

Tustin is coming off a tough loss to Crean Lutheran on Tuesday. The Tillers (13-10, 4-3) led in the fourth quarter before the Saints rallied to win 64-61 Coach Ringo Bossenmeyer’s team is currently in third place in the league and in solid position to earn a CIF playoff berth.

University at Irvine girls basketball: University (7-0) could wrap up the Pacific Coast League title with a win over its top challenger Irvine (5-2). If Irvine is able to pull off the upset, the Trojans would have to wait until next week to wrap up another league title. This one starts at 5:30 p.m. at Irvine.

Troy at La Habra boys basketball: The Highlanders (22-2, 7-0) are trying to inch closer to the Freeway League title. Second place Sonora (18-7, 6-1) is still in contention for the title.

Northwood at Portola boys basketball: Portola (13-12, 4-3) has been on a roll lately and is now not only contending for a CIF playoff berth in its first varsity season but for a PCL title. Northwood is currently tied for Beckman for first place with 5-2 records and Portola is in third place. Portola officials are expecting a large home crowd for the game.

Edison at Newport Harbor boys basketball: The Chargers (18-8, 3-1) are out to win the outright Surf League title. They play the Sailors (22-4, 1-3) tonight at 7 at Newport Harbor and the place is expected to be packed. CdM and Los Alamitos are current 2-2 with one game left after Friday.

Santa Ana at Calvary Chapel: The Saints (12-12, 5-2) have been making a playoff push and with a road victory would definitely help their chances. Santa Ana comes into the Orange Coast League game tied for second place with Estancia. Costa Mesa (12-11, 6-1) leads the league.

Tesoro at Dana Hills boys basketball: The Titans (17-5, 6-0) have clinched a share of the Sea View League title with two games left after tonight. El Toro is in second place with a 4-2 record. Tesoro, seeded No. 2 in its playoff bracket, wants to keep rolling.
