First round match-ups, top seeds and brackets for CIF football playoffs this week

San Juan Hills is the top-seeded team in Division 3 and a number of other Orange County football teams are seeded in the top four in their divisions for the CIF Southern Section playoffs that begin this week.

San Juan Hills (9-1) hosts St. Francis (8-2) Friday night in the opening round.

CIF officials said Sunday that 216 teams will be in 14 divisional brackets.

It’s the third year of competitive equity based individual school placement formulated by ratings from
the CalPreps website. First round games for most divisions are are Friday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. but could be on other dates due to stadium conflicts. (Tustin and Foothill share the same stadium and both teams have home games).

Foothill will be playing Aquinas Thursday at 7 p.m. at Tustin High School in Division 5. Corona del Mar meets Paraclete in Division 4 Thursday at 7 p.m. at Newport Harbor.

Most first round games for Division 1 are Friday, Nov. 10.

The top-seeded teams besides San Juan Hills are St. John Bosco, Rancho Cucamonga, Loyola, Newbury Park, Ontario Christian, Chino, Brentwood, Rio Hondo Prep, Torrance, Quartz Hill, Coachella Valley, San Gabriel, and Artesia.

In the eight team Division 1 bracket, St. John Bosco is top seeded, Mater Dei second, Sierra Canyon third and Centennial Corona fourth.

Mission Viejo is seeded fourth in Division 2, Corona del Mar, an at-large entry from the Sunset League, is seeded fourth in Division 4; Empire League runner-up Cypress is No. 2 in Division 6; Laguna Beach is seeded No. 2 in Division 7; Irvine, the Pacific Hills League champion is No. 2 in Division 8; Kennedy, an at-large entry from the Empire League is seeded second and Capistrano Valley Christian, the Mesquite League champion, is seeded third in Division 10.

Ocean View, at at-large entry from the Pac-4 League, is seeded fourth in Division 14. Ocean View was 2-8 last year but went 5-5 this year under first-year coach Daniel Hernandez. The Seahawks will host Bolsa Grande Friday.

Other first round games involving Orange County teams, Mater Dei hosts JSerra at Santa Ana Stadium and San Clemente plays at top-seeded St. John Bosco in Division 1 on Friday, Nov. 10.

The other divisions start on Friday, Nov. 3. Irvine hosts Jurupa Valley in Division 8; Empire League champion Tustin (10-0) hosts Warren in Division 3, Newport Harbor hosts Trabuco Hills in Division 4, Orange League champion Western is at Colony in Division 5, Crean Lutheran plays at Hart and Cypress hosts Rio Mesa in Division 6, Laguna Beach hosts El Dorado in Division 7, St. Margaret’s plays at top-seeded Rio Hondo Prep, Santa Ana plays at Santa Monica and Orange plays at Diamond Bar in Division 9; Segerstrom plays at top-seeded Torrance and Beckman plays at Capistrano Valley Christian in Division 10 and Santa Ana Valley plays at St. Monica Prep in Division 13.
