Drew Yezbak, a star guard on the Crean Lutheran High School basketball team, confirmed Monday he has committed to play college basketball at Quincy University in Quincy, IL.

“I just felt it was the best situation for me,” Yezbak said in a phone interview. “I get to play at a really good Division two program and get to play with a great coaching staff and I’m just looking forward to playing for a great program and a great university.

“I felt all the way across the board it was just the best overall fit for me.”

Yezbak said he will major in a subject which is related to business. Yezbak was a three-year standout with the Saints and this past season the 5-11 guard averaged 17 points and 3.5 assists a game while earning first team all-Empire League honors. He led the Saints to a 17-11 overall record.

Yezbak said he was also thinking about three or four other programs.

Last week, Yezbak also issued a statement on his commitment.

“I would attribute most of my success to God for blessing me with a love for the game and a passion of getting better. I was also surrounded by many coaches, mentors, and trainers that believed in me and helped push me to get better. My passion to become the best player I possibly can be and never be satisfied is what motivates me more than anything. This is only the beginning and I am so grateful to have coaches, friends, and family that support and believe in me.”

Crean Lutheran Coach Nate Klitzing said he was pleased to hear about Yezbak’s decision.

“I am so happy for Drew on his commitment to continue his basketball career at Quincy University.  Drew had received a few offers and a whole lot of interest from many colleges and universities this past year. Drew continued to put his head down and kept working on his game knowing that good things will come. It is amazing to see a player like Drew get rewarded for all his hard work, commitment, and dedication he has poured in at Crean Lutheran. Drew was a tremendous player for us and one of our most decorated athletes, and he was a great leader for our basketball program throughout his career.

“Drew trusted that God had a plan, and that the right fit would come along.  And that fit is going to take him to Illinois at Quincy University.  This is a great school and basketball program which plays at a very high NCAA DII level.  I am so proud of Drew and wish him the best in his future!”
