University High officials this week announced that Beau Budde has been named as the new varsity boys basketball coach.

Budde was selected to replace long-time coach Mike Dinneen, who is still teaching at University.

“I could not have asked for a better opportunity,” Budde said. “Uni has always had a special place in my heart both as a teacher and a coach.  I am very excited to be involved in the basketball program once again as the new head coach.

“My goals this upcoming season are to help develop structure and consistency within the program. I want Uni basketball to be known for developing players that are smart, tough and well-rounded. This upcoming season will be about learning how to compete as a team and play great defense.”

Budde is in his eighth year as a teacher at University. He has also coached at University for six years as both a varsity assistant and junior varsity head coach. Budde has also been offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at University.

He graduated from Loyola Marymount where he received a degree in business administration with an emphasis on entrepreneurship. Budde earned a credential and masters in teaching from UC Irvine.

Athletic Director Tom Shrake released a statement from the school on the hiring which noted that Budde “brings passion, expertise and an ability to connect and inspire our student athletes. We are excited for the direction our basketball program is moving under Coach Budde’s leadership.”
