Members of the Irvine High baseball team showed up at Anteater Ballpark Saturday to cheer on the UC Irvine Anteaters, who defeated Cal State Northridge 2-0 in a Big West Conference game.
The Irvine Vaqueros were there to support UCI’s junior outfielder Mikey Filia, a 2015 Irvine High graduate who was first team all-league his senior year.
“It was a great experience for the team to see what baseball looks like at the next level,” said Irvine Coach Gabriel Cota. “Being able to see a former Vaquero shows them that it is possible with hard work and dedication.”
Mikey Filia’s brother, Bubba Filia, is the catcher on this year’s Irvine High team.
“It was kind of crazy to see the whole program out at the game,” Mikey Filia told OC Sports Zone. “I remember being behind the net watching, hoping to play Division 1 baseball one day. Now being on the other side of the net playing, it was a special moment. I really appreciated them coming out to support.”
UCI (8-4 in the Big West) completed a series sweep with Saturday’s victory.
