Tustin survives University’s comeback, holds on for non-league road victory

Tustin’s boys basketball team held on to beat University on the road 47-41 surviving a furious comeback bid by the Trojans in the last five-plus minutes of the game Friday night.

University trailed 43-25 with 5:26 to go, forced five steals down the stretch and cut the lead to 46-41 with 17 seconds to go before missing a shot with the Tillers collecting the rebound.

Tustin (8-7) was led by junior forward Dillon Walker (16 points) and senior swingman Brannon Hampton (15 points, 12 in the first half). The pair accounted for 20 of Tustin’s 26 first half points. Senior guard John Gonzalez added eight points.

University (2-11) has lost several games by a bucket or two.

Junior center Abdallah Shami had another double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds (all in the second half as he played only four minutes in the first half due to foul trouble.

Junior guard Nader Chalan had 10 points (eight down the stretch), four rebounds and three steals. His sophomore brother Yousuf Chalan had just four points, but added five rebounds and seven assists. Junior Josh Kagawan had four points and four steals. University plays three games in the next four days in a tournament at Westminster High School.
