Former Beckman coach John Goins named to lead Uni boys basketball program

University High School Athletic officials announced Friday that former Beckman coach John Goins has been named new varsity boys basketball coach.

Goins was head coach at Beckman from 2016 to 2022. Before that, Goins was assistant coach from 2007 to 2016. He led the Patriots to their first league championship in school history and led Beckman teams to the second round of the CIF playoffs in three of the six seasons.

Goins resigned in March 2022 to spend more time with his family.

“Coach Goins prides himself on community building within the program,” said University Athletic Director Tom Shrake in a release. “He is passionate, organized and an educator at heart. Outside of basketball, Coach Goins lives in Tustin with his wife, who is a middle school PE teacher, and his daughter who is turning 9 next month. He is also a high school English teacher.”

“I am excited to begin the next chapter of my coaching career at University High School and would like to thank the administration for giving me this opportunity,” Goins said in a statement. “Uni has a rich basketball history and I cannot wait to work with the boys to add to it.”

Goins replaces Beau Budde, who resigned 10 games into last season for personal reasons after his team’s 3-7 start. He remained at the school as a teacher.

University wound up with a 5-20 overall mark, finishing seventh in the Pacific Coast League with a 2-7 record.
