Edison runs away from Uni in third quarter and captures 76-59 victory in Gary Raya Classic

Kaden Headington scored 28 points to lead Edison to a win Tuesday night.

Edison’s boys basketball team notched its second consecutive victory at the So Cal Elite Gary Raya Classic defeating University 76-59 Tuesday night at Woodbridge.

The Chargers led 41-34 at halftime and broke the game open in the third quarter outscoring University 23-8.

Kaden Headington led Edison with 28 points and five 3-pointers. Aiden Garnett had 20 points and Justin Strauss 9 points for the Chargers (10-4). Arjun Gill scored 24 points and Kody Uyesugi had 17 points for University.

“I thought it was a tight game,” said Edison Coach Rich Boyce. “I thought both teams played well. I just thought that half-way through the third quarter, we started being the team I thought we would be. We pushed the ball, passing to the open guy and knocking shots down.

“It was just fun to watch them play that third quarter.”

Headington led the way with his shooting and solid defensive effort.

“This was by far his best game,” Boyce said. “He was so under control and he really took care of everything. He really should be our two but our point guard is out and he’s doing a lot of extra duty. He did a great job on number 10 (Andrea Roy). He had a great all-around game.”

“We got into a good flow in the beginning,” Headington said. “Our defense really picked it up this game. We’ve been struggling a little bit shooting from the outside but we picked it up this game. There are tough teams in this tournament; we just  come out and play hard every game and I think that’s why we’re doing so well is that everyone on this team wants to win and play hard every game. Everyone is just a scrappy player on this team.”

University Coach Mike Dinneen said the Trojans couldn’t get into the flow.

“We need to control the tempo to our liking,” he said. “Once Edison got up big in the second half, they were able to both run when they had numbers to and pull it out and take off time and make us play defense for 30 seconds when they wanted.”
