Andres Aguilar smashed a grand slam and had six RBIs to lead Summit High School’s baseball team over Fullerton 11-2 in a nonleague game Saturday afternoon at Fullerton High.
Aguilar drilled his first-career grand slam and second-homer of the season and he set a career-high for RBI in a game to lead the Skyhawks (13-6). Summit from Fontana notched its eighth consecutive win while snapping Fullerton’s four-game winning streak.
“I knew I hit it hard and it felt really good when I saw it fly over the that high fence,” said Aguilar, who was on base all three times he batted and scored two runs.
Summit’s freshman right hander Chris Alzaga pitched the first four innings and gave up two unearned runs and struck out five to earn the win.
“I wasn’t nervous and I felt confident,” said Alzaga, who struck out the side in the third inning. “My slider and fastball were working well and I was happy that the coach trusted me and let me keep pitching after I gave up a walk to start the fourth inning.”
Miguel Velasquez and John Bedell got on base to lead off the Fullerton second inning and came around to score, giving the Indians a 2-0 lead.
However, it was all Summit after that. Aguilar highlighted a Skyhawks five-run third inning with a two-run double. In the fifth inning, he clouded a bases loaded blast over the centerfield fence to up the Skyhawks lead to 11-2. Samuel Lopez also had two hits, scored a run and had an RBI for Summit.
“We got down early and settled in and then our offense did what it’s been doing lately,” said Summit Coach Samuel Lopez. “We had faith in the way Chris has been pitching and we were hoping to get four or five innings out of him today. Our kids are starting to put it together and they are learning how to win.”
Indians Coach Shaun Hill said it wasn’t Fullerton’s day.
“We came out flat today and didn’t match their energy, so you have to tip your cap to them,” said Hill. “Perhaps we were looking past this game and thinking about next week’s games (with La Habra), but no excuses. We need to flush this one away and get back to work on Monday.”
