It was a busy week for Maddie Lyon of the Woodbridge High track and field team and it culminated with Lyon taking first place in the triple jump at the Orange County Championships Saturday at Mission Viejo High School.

A week earlier she competed in the Arcadia Invitational where she placed fourth in the invitational division of the triple jump with a PR of 40-00.5.

Lyon then competed with her teammates in a Pacific Coast League dual meet against University on Thursday before competing in four events in the OC Championships, according to her father, Jay Lyon.

At OC Championships, Lyon took second in the varsity 100 meter hurdles, tied for fifth in the long jump, then PR’d again in the triple jump by jumping 40-04.0 to take first.

“She now sits at No. 2, behind Michelle Sanford (mark set in 2001- 40-11.75) for her mark in triple jump at OC Championships dating back to 1983,” Jay Lyon said.

Maddie Lyon also competed in the high jump and having PR’d this year at 5-4, she decided to try at 5-2, but after a busy week which had drained her, she didn’t place, her father explained.

“After going to the Arcadia Invitational last Saturday, and jumping 40-0.5 in the triple jump event, I think it was a big boost to set me off, because it showed that I could really do it,” Maddie Lyon told OC Sports Zone.

“On Saturday, I focused on each of my events, one by one, and the importance of scoring points for my team. I took what I have learned and placed into action, and did what I needed to do.  I took a gamble on high jump and tried to enter at 5-2. I’ve been jumping 5-4, so I thought this would work for me. Unfortunately I didn’t hit the mark. But overall, I’m happy with the day and how we did.”

Two other Warriors did well at OC Championships, according to Jay Lyon. Drake Nguyen of Woodbridge set a meet record in the long jump (23-08.25) and Chris Cooper placed first in the varsity 400 dash.
