Woodbridge’s Kyle Hurry gets ready to inbounds the ball Thursday vs. Los Osos.
Woodbridge’s boys basketball stayed close for a half, but Los Osos pulled away in the second half to defeat the Warriors 72-52 in the second round of the Tustin Classic Thursday at Tustin.
Woodbridge (4-12) is back in action today, Friday, Dec. 28, facing Long Beach Millikan at 1:30 p.m.
Los Osos (9-5) led 39-28 at halftime and then took control by outscoring Woodbridge 18-13 in the third quarter.
Los Osos was led by Rojas Uriyah, who scored 27 points. Travian Williams and Seth Tippett added 12 points each.
Woodbridge, 1-1 in the tournament, was led by Chris Cooper who had nine points and Brandon Clarke-Hosler and Jackson Rain who had eight points each.
“Our effort was there today, Los Osos is very physical and obviously their point guard, (Uriyah) is an elite player and when you put that together with physical bigs, you have to defend the paint and well beyond the arc, that’s why they’re tough,” said Woodbridge Coach John Halagan.
“When we moved the ball, we had our chances. We knew we were going to be a little challenged on the boards. That happens when you’re playing bigger, physical teams, but I thought our guys acquited themselves well today. We competed and the thing about this tournament, even though we lost that game, we played two quality opponents and the third opponent is another quality team in Long Beach Millikan.
“We didn’t schedule this tournament for easy games. I know Coach (Ringo) Bossenmeyer puts together a very competitive tournament field and this is certainly no exception. We wanted to be here and continue to challenge our guys after taking two losses in league last week on the road and losing to a very good Dana Hills team in the North-South Challenge.”
