University’s girls tennis team, which has been the top ranked team in CIF open division all season, was upset Friday in the CIF finals by No. 2 seed Peninsula 10-8 at the Claremont Club.

It was the first loss for the Trojans (21-1) all season. Peninsula finished 17-5.

“Unfortunately we were not able to bring home the trophy today,” said University Coach John Kessler. “We lost a heartbreaking match to Peninsula high, 8 to 10.

“Our singles girls were only able to win three of nine sets while our doubles teams won five of eight. Maya Wang and Emily Markus won two of three sets playing first doubles while Megan Bee and Therese Garcia won two of three sets at second doubles.”

Kessler said it was still a great season for the Trojans.

“We could not be prouder of how our girls played today and throughout this memorable season,” Kessler said.  “Pacific Coast League champs, Point Loma Invitational champs, the top ranked team in Orange County and finishing the season with a record of 21-1 are just some of awards this year.”

“For Uni, this was the seventh time the girls have made it to the CIF championship match while the boys have been to 11 title matches.  Time to reload and get back to work.”
