University High School’s girls flag football team, coached by Jeff Marchiorlatti, has begun preparations for the 2025 season opener.
The Trojans open the season with a home game on Wednesday Aug. 13 vs. San Clemente at 5 p.m.
“Uni returns with a strong team, having only lost two seniors from last year’s squad that finished third in the PCL,” Marchiorlatti said. “Despite facing injuries that led to an early exit in CIF (playoffs) to the eventual runner-up, Trabuco Hills, the team is now healthy and ready for a successful run with the ultimate goal of PCL and CIF championships.”
The Trojans are led by senior captains Carson Cruz and Elyse Mills. Junior Arden Marchiorlatti, who was named first team All-CIF and all-PCL, also returns.
“After securing a CIF championship in softball and committing to play at the next level, senior captain Cruz will quarterback the team for a third consecutive year, bringing invaluable experience and leadership,” the coach said.
“Mills, who earned first team All-PCL honors, is recognized as a versatile athlete and one of the league and county’s top players. Marchiorlatti contributes significantly on both sides of the ball, leading the PCL in interceptions, ranking in the top four in CIF and top 20 nationally in that category. Offensively, she is among the top three in both the PCL and CIF for receiving.”
University had a successful off-season winning the 4Vert Tournament championship in the spring.
“We aim to build on that momentum as our season begins,” Marchiorlatti said.
University has a number of special events this season, including the OC Labor Day Classic at Uni Saturday, Aug. 30 and Monday, Sept. 1. There will also be a community night on Wednesday, Sept. 17.
This will be the second year that girls flag football has had CIF sanctioned playoffs.
