Tesoro’s star guard Matt DeAngelo signs to play basketball at Menlo College

Matt DeAngelo, a senior guard from Tesoro, said Saturday he has signed a scholarship offer to play college basketball at Menlo College in Atherton.

Menlo College is a private 4-year college specializing in business, located in the Silicon Valley area of San Francisco and directly adjacent to Menlo Park, Palo Alto and Stanford University. 

DeAngelo, a 6-0, 172-pound senior guard, was Tesoro’s co-captain and leading scorer, averaging more than 20.3 points per game during the regular season.

DeAngelo has been selected to the Orange County North-South Al-Star Basketball Game on May 9 at Cypress College, as well as a co-MVP of the Sea View League. He was a four-year varsity member and led the team to a 21-5 overall record this year and conference championship of the Sea View League. 

DeAngelo was one of the top 3-point shooters in Orange County and is an excellent free throw shooter, defender, rebounder and ball handler.

DeAngelo, who was often double teamed and even triple teamed by opponents, has deep range, shooting over 40 percent on 3-pointers and made 60 3-pointers during the season against multiple defenders and match-up zone defenses.

He also set a school record shooting 85.2 percent rom the free throw line during the regular season and league play. DeAngelo’s game career high is a school record 42 points on 10 3-pointers, and he also had two 33-point games this season. 

Menlo Basketball is a NAIA Division 1 program that competes in the highly competitive Golden State Athletic Conference and the team is nationally ranked at No. 20 in the most recent NAIA College Coaches poll.

Menlo is currently 17-7 and in second place in the GSAC with an 11-4 league mark. DeAngelo will play for head coach Kaniela Aiona, currently in his fifth season at Menlo, along with assistant coaches Jamison Montgomery and Richard Fujii. Keith Spataro is the vice president for Athletics. 

DeAngelo, a resident of Coto de Caza, will return to Southern California during the 2020-2021 season to compete against nationally ranked and recognized teams in Southern California such as Westmont College, The Master’s University, Vanguard University and Hope International University.
