First baseman Luc Stuka was the hitting star for CdM Monday.
Corona del Mar’s baseball team defeated Fullerton 2-0 Monday afternoon in the season opener and the first game for new head coach Kevin McCaffrey, who replaces long-time coach John Emme.
Emme retired from coaching last season after leading the Sea Kings to a 20-7 overall record and second place finish in the Pacific Coast League.
Senior Luc Stuka led the way for the Sea Kings, going 3 for 3 with a two-run home run. He also made a few great plays at first base.
Seniors Tom Wilcox and Tanner Ivey combined to throw a one-hit shutout. Wilcox started and threw three innings, allowing one hit. Ivey pitched four innings and did not allow a hit to record the win.
“I thought Tommy and Tanner looked really sharp today,” said McCaffrey. “We pitched extremely well and played great defense. That is what we pride ourselves on.”
Sophomore Ryan Zimmerman had a great at bat that led to a big hit, McCaffrey said. He scored on Stuka’s home run.
“Blake Butcher made a few really nice plays at third base,” McCaffrey added.
The Sea Kings open up the Newport Elks Tournament on Thursday at St. Paul.
