Six OC football teams tune up with six-way scrimmage at Tustin

Foothill’s Michael Mcfarlin goes for yardage Friday in a scrimmage against Segerstrom.

With a week before the start of the high school football season, six Orange County squads took part in a scrimmage Friday at Northrup Field at Tustin. Tustin, Foothill, Beckman, Segerstrom, Buena Park and Trabuco Hills took part in the scrimmage.

No scores were kept, but teams appeared to accomplish what they set out to do and get some hitting in before the real games begin.

“We got really positive response from all the programs,” said Foothill Coach Doug Case. “All scrimmages were competitive and all of the programs are headed in the right direction.”

Foothill used three quarterbacks: senior JD Curran, junior Luke Peterman and sophomore Joey Garcia.

“All three are capable and all are doing a great job,” Case said. “Curran is the likely starter heading into next week.”

Tustin athletic director Thomas Giebe was also pleased.

“I think every team wants two results from a scrimmage, to come out healthy and for your team to compete well,” said Giebe, also one of the assistant coaches. “In that sense it was a success for us. Whether it’s week zero or week 14 we always have things to work on.
“The scrimmage gives us the opportunity to gauge where we are at and what still needs work before we open with Capistrano Valley this Friday.”
