Veteran Orange County coach Rusty Van Cleave has been named the new boys basketball coach at Beckman High School, according to Athletic Director Steve Fischel.
Van Cleave replaces Lucas Armstrong, who has been the head coach the past two seasons. Fischel said that work commitments prevented Armstrong from continuing as the coach. Armstrong led Beckman to a 14-14 record last season. The Patriots finished 14-11 under Armstrong the previous year.
The new Beckman coach made a name for himself at Foothill. He led the Knights to the CIF 3AA title in 2010 and the CIF 1A crown in 2015. Van Cleave has also been a head coach at Ocean View and Mission Viejo and has had numerous assistant coaching positions.
“Rusty is our new head coach but officially taking over in a week when our summer program concludes,” Fischel said this week. “Coach Armstrong and staff were able to finish off the summer for our kids.”
