PORTOLA 8, NORTHWOOD 5: The Bulldogs, led by first year coach Bryan Resnick, won their Pacific Coast League opener Thursday.
Starting pitcher Tristan Nguyen went three innings, allowing four earned runs. Reliever Mitchell Stein pitched three scoreless innings. He has a 0.00 ERA in 6 2/3 innings and has struck out nine.
Rocky Palacio was 3 for 3 with two RBI and two runs scored, Brandon Kuromoto was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored; Lucas Marinelli was 2 for 2 with a run scored and Darin Sylvester was 2 for 3 with a double, RBI and a run scored.
Through five games, Marinelli has a .750 batting average, Palacio .625 and Kuromoto .550.
Portola (3-2, 1-0) scored six runs in the first two innings.
Northwood (0-6, 0-2) battled back in the middle innings with four runs. Portola added a run in the fifth with an RBI double by Sylvester, and an RBI single from Kuromoto. Stein threw three solid innings of relief, striking out four and allowing just one unearned run to complete the win.
BECKMAN 3, LAGUNA HILLS 0: AJ Roettger threw a complete game shutout, scattering four hits while striking out nine to get the Pacific Coast League victory for Beckman (4-1, 2-0). Roettger improved his record to 2-0 on the season. Beckman plays at Irvine Saturday at 11 a.m.
COSTA MESA 11, GODINEZ 0: Michael Joyce got the win for the Mustangs (5-2) pitching five innings and striking out seven. JJ Kibin was 1 for 1 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored, Caleb Robeck was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI, Sam Stute was 2 for 3 with a run scored, Jacob Allen was 1 for 3 with a double and two RBI and Matt Anderson was 1 for 3 with a double and two RBI.
FOOTHIILL 8, EL MODENA 2: The Knights improved their record to 2-0 in the Century Conference with the win Thursday. Erin Gonzalez pitched 4 2/3 innings to notch the victory. Brady Schrank was 3 for 3 with a triple, two runs scored and two RBI and Aiden Taurek was 1 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Foothill (5-2 overall) hosts Newport Harbor Saturday at 11 a.m.
ESTANCIA 6, FAIRMONT PREP 0: Estancia (9-0) was led by pitcher Trevor Scott (3-0) who pitched a complete game, allowing two hits and striking out 13.
Miles Moyer led the hitting attack going 2 for 4 with two runs scored. Blake Peck was 1 for 3 with a double and two RBI, Tyler Humphries was 1 for 3 with a double and a run scored, John Uchytil was 1 for 3 with a run scored and an RBI and James De La O was 2 for 3 with a triple and two RBI.
