The Pioneers’ streak of five consecutive shutouts ended. But Western (6-1) was able to gain some momentum for the start of league play this week.
“Artesia did a great of forcing the action,” said Western Coach Dan Davidson. “They had a good strategy on defense and tried to take us away from the things we like to do. Many of our issues came from the preparation that Artesia did to get ready for us and they should be recognized for that.
“I believe we really responded to their challenge in the second half both physically and mentally. Isiah Del Toro (the quarterback) did an amazing job of overcoming adversity with some great plays in the second half after a rough first half.”
Davidson said that Robbie Sauvao was also solid.
“Robbie Sauvao really helped us on both sides of the ball,” Davidson said. “He had a few outstanding runs and fought for tough yards all night.
“Defensively all though it was not a shutout that people were talking about, we got them to turn the ball over a few times.”
Western had interceptions by Caine Savage, Cassius Savage, Jaden Hagan and Sauvao.
Western opens Pac-4 play Friday night at Ocean View at Ocean View.
“I am excited to complete the preseason and get into our league competition,” Davidson said. “I know Ocean View, Laguna Beach and Godinez will be a real challenge and I am looking forward to see how we respond to the challenges ahead.”
