Santa Ana High School’s football team overcame a sluggish start to defeat Estancia 59-7 in an Orange Coast League game Friday night at Jim Scott Stadium.
Co-league leading Santa Ana (6-1, 3-0) took a 39-7 lead into the halftime break.
The Saints were once again led by sophomore quarterback Sergio Torres, senior running back Jason Costa and wide receiver Raymond Casillas.

“It was great. I was a little worried. We came in a little light in the beginning, but then they turned it on,” said Santa Ana coach Charlie TeGantvoort.
“Jason Costa, and Raymond Casillas had great games and Sergio Torres did really well game-managing. Everyday he (Sergio) gets a little better. Gets a little older. More experienced. At the beginning of the season you can say he was inexperienced, but now he has more than half a season. He is a great athlete and great kid. Great grades. And the future is extremely high for that kid.”
Santa Ana had seven different players score a touchdown: four passing touchdowns to three different receivers, and four rushing touchdowns by three different ball carriers.
The Saints cashed in another score off a turnover.
“We put about three or four different running backs in that all produced,” TeGantvoort said.
According to Tegantvoort, a big reason for their success against Estancia was primarily because of the job done by the offensive line.
“I thought the O-line really picked it up today,” he said. “They picked up some great blocking, and it’s great to see. When our O-line does well, everyone else does well, and it’s great to see this group get a lot better tonight.”
Santa Ana faces Costa Mesa (4-4, 2-1) Friday night at Santa Ana Stadium while Estancia will face Calvary Chapel (4-3, 0-2).
“Costa Mesa is having a great season,” TeGantvoort said. “Van Tuinei is doing a great job, we’re excited to play them, we’re excited to see them. This season is all about appreciating every day and every game and we will be ready.”
