Irvine High’s football team opened the season Friday night with a solid effort defeating Canyon 29-6 in a non-league game at Fred Kelly Stadium.

“I feel like we played a pretty solid first half,” said Irvine Coach Tom Ricci.

Cameron Goods, who will be the lead runner in the backfield, led the Vaqueros rushing for 117 yards on 18 carries and two touchdowns.

“He only had one negative play for minus one yard,” Ricci said. “Our defense looked solid and we had great execution from linebackers Tate Zimmerman and Baden Tanikawa.

“Tanikawa also caught a deflated punt and ran it in for a score early in the game. I feel like we played a little sloppy in the second half, but I take responsibility for that. I feel like we took our foot off the gas too early. I’ve got to hand it to Canyon, they fought hard through the entire game. They are a good ball club.”
