In fact Newport Harbor led briefly, but Corona del Mar took charge in the second quarter and went on to capture a 56-17 Sunset League victory over the Sailors.
“A great night for the Sea Kings winning the 7th straight Battle of the Bay, and a sweep by all three levels,” CdM Coach Dan OShea said Saturday.
The Sea Kings outscored the Sailors 28-7 in the second quarter.
CdM (9-0, 4-0) earned a share of its second straight Sunset League title while Edison and Los Alamitos are tied for second place at 3-1. Newport Harbor is 7-2 overall and 2-2 in league play.
CdM’s offense was clicking all night.
“Offensively, we were wicked good with 500 plus yards of offense and four man grand slam of Ethan Garbers, John Humphreys, Mark Redman, and Bradley Schlom having big nights in the passing game,” OShea said.
“John Humphreys was specifically on fire with four TD catches. The biggest credit should go to our offensive line who was the ‘Player of the Week’ previously against Fountain Valley and were outstanding again last night.”
OShea also had some praise for an improved Newport Harbor team which remains in the hunt for the CIF playoffs.
“Hats off to Newport Harbor who did a fine job early in the game balancing their run game with number three (Justin McCoy) and quick throw passing game successfully playing catch on the perimeter,” OShea said.
“We look forward to seeing the Los Al Griffins next week for an opportunity to secure the outright Sunset League Championship after sharing the Title with them last year.”
The CdM defense was led by Mark Redman who had two sacks. Other sacks were recorded by Thomas Bouda and Chase Zanck, ” who were all relentless in our pass rush on the QB,” OShea said.
Cole Rener had an interception and Zack Green had an 83-yard kick return TD as well, OShea added.
