Orange County boys basketball highlights, final scores for Friday, Jan. 23

CRESTVIEW LEAGUE

CREAN LUTHERAN 60, CANYON 47: The Saints (19-6, 5-1) completed a league series sweep Friday at Canyon. Crean Lutheran remains tied with La Habra for first place in the league. The two teams play Tuesday at Crean Lutheran.

Hunter Caplan, who missed Tuesday’s game with an illness, led the Saints with 17 points. Chadrack Mpoyi had 13 points and seven rebounds, Jacob Majok 12 points and 15 rebounds and Caden Jones and Nick Giarrusso each had nine points for the Saints. Giarrusso also had nine seven rebounds.

Jonah Kim led Canyon (15-10, 2-3) with 16 points.

Crean Lutheran led 23-22 at halftime before extending its lead to 42-37 after three quarters.

Crean Lutheran plays Bishop Gorman Saturday at 9 p.m. at the Nike Extravaganza at Mater Dei.

SOUTH COAST LEAGUE

SAN CLEMENTE 92, EL TORO 54: Bryan Blake had 20 points, Desi Gutierrez 18 points and Shane Kiley and Deeter Hansen nine points each to lead the Tritons (14-10, 4-1).

SAN JUAN HILLS 64, DANA HILLS 51: The Stallions (13-10, 3-2) were led by Rocco Jensen who had 29 points. Kellen Owens added 10 points, Garrett Brehmer eight points and Cash Harris seven points for San Juan Hills.

SEA VIEW LEAGUE

TRABUCO HILLS 58, BECKMAN 51: The Mustangs moved into a second place tie with Beckman with the win. Ryan Hull had 21 points, all in the second half to lead the Mustangs. Carter Peckson had 18 points and Jonah Silver three points, six rebounds and two assists.

FREEWAY LEAGUE

El DORADO 59, VILLA PARK 45: The Golden Hawks (22-6, 6-0) were led by Noah Barker, who had 15 points. Evan Nam, Jack Boettner and Ryan Northcott all had nine points each and Elias Rodarte seven points for Coach Ryan Mounce’s team.

PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE

PORTOLA 67, UNIVERSITY 54: League-leading Portola remained undefeated in league on senior night, but not without a couple of scares from University. The visiting Trojans jumped out to an 11-5 lead and still led 14-13 at the end of one quarter.

With the score knotted at 16 all, the home Bulldogs went on a 12-0 run courtesy of four three-pointers to take a 28-16 lead. They expanded the lead to 41-27 at half. The Trojans narrowed the margin to 53-41 at the end of the third quarter thanks to Abdallah Shami’s 11 points in the period.

University cut the lead to 53-46 with just under six minutes to play, but Max Paulsen scored 11 points for Portola in the quarter to help the home team win.

Portola (19-5, 6-0) honored five seniors: Paulsen, Gavin Nguyen, Lucas Ip, Ryusei Mitani and Tyler Nong. Paulsen was top scorer with 21 points and three 3-pointers. Nguyen had 11 points with three 3-pointers during the second quarter run. Sophomore Steve Yang added 10 points, junior Ryan Novak nine points and Ip eight points.

University (6-16, 2-4) was led by Shami with 16 points and eight rebounds before fouling out with just over two minutes to play. Sophomore forward Lucas had 13 points, six rebounds and two blocks. Senior forward Josh Thio tied a career high with 12 points and four 3-pointers adding four rebounds and three assists.

WOODBRIDGE 43, NORTHWOOD 22: The Warriors were led by Jaiden Sabino, who scored 25 points in his second game back after being sidelined with a fractured hand on his non-shooting hand. Zacc Saleh added six points for Woodbridge (15-9, 3-3). Northwood is in third place with a 10-12 overall record and 4-2 league mark.

All eight teams will compete in a league post-season tournament beginning next week. The top four seeds earn home games.

IRVINE 71, SAGE HILL 44: Second place Irvine (14-10, 5-1) was led by Holden Stearns, who had 19 points. Bentley Nguyen had 11 points and Chase Brito eight points to lead the Vaqueros, who won their fourth in a row. Irvine wraps up league play Monday at St. Margaret’s.

Irvine and the other teams in the league will then compete in the PCL post-season tournament beginning Thursday.

COAST LEAGUE

WESTERN 59, ANAHEIM 44: On senior night, the second place Pioneers (8-15, 4-1) were led by Shaan Mamba who had 18 points and six rebounds. Kalani Tran had 14 points, five rebounds and four assists, Shadyn Rodriguez 14 points and seven rebounds and Omar Flores 10 points and 11 rebounds. It was the Flores’ fourth double double in legue play.
