Northwood’s High’s offensive coordinator Dan Selway has accepted the position of offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Capistrano Valley, Coach Sean Curtis announced on Twitter Wednesday.
Selway, a former standout quarterback at Northwood, will also be the youth camp director at Capo Valley.
“I’m excited for the new challenge,” Selway told OC Sports Zone Wednesday. “Capo Valley has been a great program over the years and the opportunity to coach with a close friend and great coach Sean Curis is going to be fun.
“I’m very grateful for my time at Northwood and it’s tough to leave the players, coaches and great families at Northwood but I am not going far and as an alum I’ll always be watching and supporting the T’Wolves.
“Capo Valley has a challenging schedule for 2020 and I’m looking forward to getting to work and meeting all the players.”
Coach Curtis said he is looking forward to Selway joining his staff.
“We could not be more thrilled to add Dan to the staff,” Curtis said. “He will be taking over the offensive coordinator responsibilities. We will combine both of our offenses to create a system that works best for the players here at Capo. It’s a great fit obviously because Dan and I played together for my dad at Northwood. A lot of the schemes we run are very similar because of that. We both have had success playing and coaching in this system. It will pay off big time for us to be able to bring in a guy like Dan and essentially build off of what we are already doing.
“He will also be taking over the youth camp responsibilities for our program. We have several different camps that we are about to announce. One we are really excited about is the ‘Dan Selway QB Clinic.’ This will be a little different than most of the other youth camps out there. We will utilize the classroom with chalk talk, film study, character development, leadership skills, and goal setting. Everything that goes in to be a successful QB at the high school level and beyond. The second component will obviously be field work where will integrate football specific training for skill positions alongside the QBs. We are trying to give kids in South County a camp where they can have fun, improve their skills and learn the game.
“Lastly, Dan will be our quarterback coach and run our skill camp series. This will be for current players in the program. It is essentially our pre-spring. So current players in the program will also benefit from Dan’s expertise in personal training and skill development.”
Talk about Selway joining the staff began about three years ago.
“We wanted to build something special that we could do for a long period of time,” Curtis said. “It’s great to have a high quality coach join my staff that is also a very close friend of mine. I look at Kevin Hettig and Dan O’Shea at CdM or Bruce Rollinson with Dave Money at Mater Dei… Those guys are obviously great coaches but you can tell they are close friends and don’t care who gets the credit. That’s what I’m trying to build here at Capo. I want that family atmosphere where coaches come to have a positive impact on our players but also have a ton of fun doing it.”
Northwood Coach Paige Nobles expressed his support for Selway.
“I was actually putting together our spring camp scripts when I received a phone from Coach Selway letting me know about his decision to accept a position at Capo Valley High School with Coach Sean Curtis,” Nobles said.
“I know the decision to leave Northwood was very difficult for Coach Selway to make because I know how much he loves these players, the coaching staff and of course Northwood. I told Coach Selway I was very proud of him because I know how difficult that decision had to be because I had to make a similar one two seasons ago when I left Laguna Beach High School to come to Northwood.
“You can’t replace those relationships. I also told Coach Selway no matter what program he went to he would make that program or any program that much better. Capo Valley High School and head coach Sean Curtis (also a Northwood alum) are extremely lucky to land such an offensive minded genius.
“On a personal note these last two seasons that we coached together we became close friends and you will not find a more genuine caring guy. He truly loves what he does and goes out of his way to make sure whomever he is coaching will have the best of the best to make them better. I told Coach Selway the door to Northwood would always remain open for him.
“I wish Coach Selway, his beautiful family, Capo Valley High School’s football program and Coach Sean Curtis nothing but great success in his next journey of his coaching career.”
Nobles said no replacement has been made.
“As for finding a replacement for Coach Selway will be very difficult because Coach Selway was one of the best young OC’s (offensive coordinators) in Orange County,” he said. “In the interim I will be taking over that role as the OC.”
