Some nights, Beckman’s leading scorer Dylan Thoerner is double teamed and his scoring is limited somewhat.
Tuesday night, there was no stopping Thoerner as he poured in a game-high 25 points to lead Beckman to a nonleague 57-35 victory over Valencia at Beckman.
Ethan Bozzo added nine points for the Patriots (4-2).
Beckman led 25-13 at halftime and broke the game open in the third quarter, outscoring Valencia 19-4.
“He had some nice match-ups and some of the actions we were running we had we had a lot of success with,” said Beckman Coach John Goins. “He’s a good player and I had to call a timeout at one point to remind the guys that ‘hey look, you got to give it to the guy who’s shooting over 50 percent from the field and averaging 20 points’ so we were able to find him.
“We found him a lot in the first quarter, we started to get it to him a little more in the third quarter. Every now and then he disappears because he’s unselfish and he wants to just run the offense, so I have to coax him, along with everybody else, to get him to take a few more shots.”
Thoerner only played about half of the third quarter before returning for part of the final stanza.
Valencia (0-2) was led by Michael Palacios who had nine points. Devin Jenkins and Dalton Sloniger added seven points each for the Tigers.
“To hold a team to 13 points in one half, that’s a lot of work,” Goins said. “And to hold a team under 40 is a lot of work. Our goals is to keep them in the low 50’s with the hope we will score around 60 or so.”
