Barela was named the game’s MVP.
Tesoro (8-2) was led by Tyler Broughton (14 points) and Kaden Garrett (10 points).
The Titans held a 30-28 lead at halftime, but Newport Harbor came out fired up in the third quarter, outscoring the Titans 6-0 to take the lead.
“We thought we just needed to settle down a little bit,” said Newport Harbor Coach Robert Torribo. “And that’s all Tesoro. They’re well coached and they play hard and they defend and they rattled us for sure but we took a few deep breaths and hit a couple shots, which always helps and then we moved on.”
Newport Harbor outscored Tesoro 15-10 in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
The Sailors were able to contain Tesoro’s talented 6-8 center Noah Honetschlager, double and triple teaming him at times. He wound up with seven points.
“We tried to take away the big man the best we could, he’s a great player and he’s going to get his no matter what and luckily for us in the second half, their shots didn’t fall as often and our’s did,” Torribio said.
