LAGUNA HILLS 2, WOODBRIDGE 1: The Hawks got a complete game from Billy Schellenberg in the Pacific Coast League game at Laguna Hills Tuesday to move into a tie for first place with Woodbridge. Both teams are 12-3.
Travis Williams was 2 for 3 with a walk-off single in the seventh inning and Schellenberg had a home run and an RBI to lead the Hawks offensively. Andrew Pinette was 2 for 3 with a double and scored the game-winning run for Laguna Hills.
Jack Bunnell pitched six innings for Woodbridge, striking out nine. Ryan Kato homered to account for the Warriors run. Jaeden Hong-Tieu had a triple for Woodbridge.
“Both Bunnell and Schellenberg pitched really well,” said Laguna Hills Coach Drew Hillman. “I am really proud of how our guys responded after a shift of momentum, from getting thrown out on a close play at the plate in the bottom of the sixth, to giving up a lead off home run that tied the game, and a triple on the very next pitch. Being able to bounce back after that was very encouraging to see.”
The teams play again Wednesday at Ryan Lemmon Stadium at 3:30 p.m.
BECKMAN 11, UNIVERSITY 8: The Patriots (11-4) were led by Nick McLain, who was 3 for 4 with a double and a two-run home run and three RBI. Cade McGuire was 3 for 4 with a double, triple and three RBI and Blake Dimos was 3 for 4 with an RBI.
Beckman, the defending PCL champion, is one game behind PCL co-leaders Woodbridge and Laguna Hills.
Freshman Zack Ireland (3-0) got the win relief for Beckman.
“We had some ups and downs and managed to stay with the plan offensively,” said Beckman Coach Kevin Lavalle. “Today was a good day for us. (Beckett) Kreter, the University pitcher, is very good, and there were innings where he just dominated. Sometimes that’s just baseball and you have to keep grinding away.”
IRVINE 4, PORTOLA 3: Irvine improved its record to 8-7 in the Pacific Coast League with the walk-off victory in eight innings.
“It was a back and forth game that really showed our resiliency,” said Irvine Coach Gabriel Cota. “Tons of credit to their guy (Kaeden Foucart). He shut us down. Portola scored two runs in the the eighth, but we were able to stick with it and score three in our half to walk it off.”
Tate Zimmerman led Irvine, going 4 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Samuel Dimaculanan was 1 for 2 with two walks. JC Allen pitched the first six innings, allowing one earned run and struck out six. Taylor Skelley got the win with two innings of relief. He struck out three.
MARINA 2, NEWPORT HARBOR 1: Marina got a strong pitching effort from Connor Wylde, who struck out the first five Sailors he faced and wound up with eight in the Wave League game. He pitched a complete game, allowing four hits.
The Vikiings overcame a one-run deficit in the bottom of the fifth inning. Chad Lux started the rally with a leadoff double. The Vikings cashed in two errors to take a 2-1 lead and Wylde retired the last six Sailors to finish the game. The two teams continue Wave League action on Thursday and Saturday in this year’s truncated league schedule.
