Irvine’s High’s football team, coming off a 30-14 upset victory over No. 4 seeded Ocean View in the CIF Division 11 playoffs, will be on the road to face Hemet Friday night at 7 in the second round.
Also on Friday night, Northwood, which defeated Rancho Alamitos 17-10, will be at home at Irvine Stadium to face No. 2 seeded Laguna Beach in the Division 12 playoffs.
Irvine and Northwood are making their first appearance in the CIF playoffs since 2014.
In Division 1, top-seeded St. John Bosco is at San Clemente, Mater Dei is at Mission Viejo and Oaks Christian is at JSerra.
Santa Ana, the No. 3 seed in Division 8, will be on the road to face Temecula Valley, which defeated Woodbridge 42-17 on Friday night. Santa Ana opened with a 48-26 victory over Fountain Valley.
Patrick McMorris had another big night for the Saints.
Woodbridge, the Pacific Coast League champion, ended the season with a 7-4 record.
It was the final high school game for a number of talented Woodbridge seniors, including quarterback Kyle Hurry and all-purpose players Jacob Nash and Elyjah Rush, who are featured in this story.
The Warriors were hoping to advance to the second round and get a rematch with Santa Ana, a team they lost to early in the season.
Top-seeded Corona del Mar, which defeated Redondo Union 49-14 on Friday, will host Yorba Linda Friday night at 7 at Newport Harbor in the second round of the Division 4 playoffs. Yorba Linda defeated Chino Hills 28-21.
Another key match-up will have Garden Grove facing Aliso Niguel Friday at 7 at Aliso Niguel in the Division 9 playoffs. Aliso Niguel, the No. 4 seed, opened with a 45-20 victory over Foothill Friday night.
Garden Grove, the Big 4 League champion, defeated West Torrance 46-22.
