“El Modena was CIF champion last year,” Gibson said. “They are well coached and explosive. We are playing five preseason games of county top 20 teams. There will be no easy weeks especially this week.”

Coach’s comment: “It took us a little over two years to prepare for last week, and couldn’t be more proud of our program, and our school for getting it done,” said Coach Peter Abe. “The energy and enthusiasm in the stadium for our first varsity game was infectious, and we look forward to continuing to grow together as a program as we work towards playing in the always tough Pacific Coast League.
“Getting that first win for the Bulldogs was great for our confidence and motivations to continue to push the pace to get better each week, but we recognize that it’s a long, challenging road in front of us.
“We asked the players to take Friday night and Saturday to celebrate, then get themselves refocused and ready to tackle week one, one day at a time, one play at a time.”
This week’s game: Friday at 7 p.m. vs. Saddleback at Century.
“This will be Saddleback’s first home game, so we expect them to be fired up and ready to put on a show for their home crowd,” Abe said. “The Roadrunners are a big, physical, team, so we will need to limit preventable mistakes, while consistently matching that toughness throughout the game. The Bulldogs look forward to a good match-up week one.”
