Irvine High School’s football team used a strong defensive effort to defeat Beckman 13-0 Friday night at Irvine Stadium.
The Irvine defense had five interceptions: two by Nathan Sasaki and one each by Jaden Burke, Ian Hew and Solomon Carrillo. Bobby Tufford had a fumble recovery for the Vaqueros (3-3).
“The defense played tough,” said Irvine Coach Tom Ricci. “Beckman played tough and physical. Coach (Kyle) Jaeger’s defense kept us in the game. We had way too many penalties.
“I need to find a way to cut those down. All our interceptions for touchdowns were called back on penalties that could have been avoided. Hopefully we can heal up over for the next few weeks and be ready for Woodbridge (Friday, Oct. 7).”
Evan Hasegawa led Irvine’s offense, rushing for 148 yards on 26 carries.
Quarterback Joseph Tierney completed 8 of 16 passes for 91 yards and one touchdown pass to Deacon Moss, who had four catches for 59 yards. Tierney scored on a TD run for the Vaqueros other score.
Irvine has a bye next week while Beckman (2-3) has another non-league game at Dana Hills Friday night.
