Fullerton College men’s basketball coach Perry Webster has been able to enjoy the summer after a memorable 2018-19 season that culminated in his squad winning the California Community College Association’s state title, the fourth in school history.
“Looking back at it now, it’s a heck of an accomplishment for our guys, I really miss those guys; they did such a good job and they’re such a fun team to be around, said Webster, who on Saturday helped out at the Hoops by Ugland Skills Summit at Beckman High presented by local basketball writer Devin Ugland. “But we’re not going to rest on our laurels.”
The Hornets won the title by defeating City College of San Francisco in March.
Webster said the prospects for the future appear bright.
“We’re going to try and get back there for another one. I think we got a pretty good team. Some guys who came in that we like and a couple guys returning we really like and we’re going to try and make the most of the season ahead of us.”
Webster said the players on last year’s squad “really cared about each other. There were no egos. It was all about winning. It was never about one individual guy. It’s reality. The teams that I’ve been on that have won championships have been unselfish groups. That group of guys, the group of leaders, Ronne Readus, Rodrick McCobb and Lance Coleman II, were really unselfish guys and that kind of went through the whole team.”
Webster said the community and the administration was excited and the players all received championship rings.
“It’s hard to say if you’re going to repeat or what you’re going to do. We’re just going to try and put our best foot forward. The big thing is to get our guys to buy in and come together. If we do that, we will see what happens.”
