Four OC girls water polo teams earn top seeds in CIF playoffs starting this week

Four Orange County squads earned top seeds for the CIF girls high school water polo playoffs that begin this week.

CIF officials announced that 152 teams will battle for six divisional championships.

The tournaments will conclude with championship finals matches at Mt. San Antonio College Aquatics Center on Saturday, Feb. 21.

In the Open Division, which will have a pool play format, Trinity League champion Mater Dei (22-2) is seeded first, Sunset League champion Newport Harbor (22-3) is second, Marmonte League champion Oaks Christian (17-5) is third and Trinity League runner-up Orange Lutheran (17-5) is fourth.

JSerra (16-9) earned an at-large berth.

Pool play matches Wednesday: Long Beach Wilson at Mater Dei; San Marcos vs. Orange Lutheran at Santiago Canyon College; Corona del Mar at Newport Harbor; JSerra at Oaks Christian.

In Division 1, South Coast League champion San Clemente (19-8) is seeded No. 1, Crestview League champion Foothill (17-11) is second and South Coast League runner-up Beckman (14-11) is third.

Opening round matches Friday, 5 p.m. include: Huntington Beach at San Clemente; Alta Loma at Beckman and Buena at Foothill.

In Division 3, Freeway League champion Crean Lutheran (17-9) is seeded first. Marina from the Sunset League earned an at-large berth.

Opening round matches on Thursday, 5 p.,m., include: Citrus Valley vs. Crean Lutheran at Woollett Aquatics Complex and San Juan Hills at Marina.

In Division 4, Tesoro (7-13), the No. 3 team from the Sea View League is seeded first.

Opening round matches, Thursday, 5 p.m. include: California at Tesoro and Nordhoff at Cypress.

In Division 5, Empire League runner-up Costa Mesa (5-11) is seeded third.

Opening round matches Thursday at 5 p.m. include: Orange at Costa Mesa, Fontana at Laguna Hills and Webb at Tustin.
