Cypress, Tesoro, Newport Harbor and CdM boys basketball squads capture victories

Cypress boys basketball team improved its overall record to 17-2 defeating Valencia 59-37 Friday night in an Empire League opener at Cypress.

Anthony Tello scored 15 points, Clifton Patterson Jr. had 13 points and Jared Brown and Christian Chai had seven points each for the Centurions.

“We had a balanced night scoring and our defensive intensity was up,” said Cypress Coach Derek Mitchell.

Cypress is home against Pacifica on Monday and plays at Tustin on Wednesday.

Tesoro 67, Portola 23: The Titans (11-4) won the non-league game on senior night. Noah Honetschlager and Matt DeAngelo had 13 points each. Tyler LeFever and Cole Mirza added eight points each for the Titans.

Newport Harbor 60, Huntington Beach 49: Sam Barela scored 18 points, Dayne Chalmers had 12 points and Will Harvey 10 points to lead the Sailors (19-1) in a nonleague game.

Newport Harbor extended its school record with its 14th victory in a row.

Corona del Mar 59, Fountain Valley 41: Jack Stone scored 21 points and John Humphreys added 16 points to lead the Sea Kings (15-5) in a non-league game. Jeremiah Davis had 16 points to lead Fountain Valley (7-15).

Paradise (Ariz). 53, Northwood 43: Shandon Sharifi scored 11 points, Nathan Maloney had eight points and Trent Harper and Seth Locke six points each for Northwood.
