Crean Lutheran water polo team continues fast start with tourney championship

Crean Lutheran’s boys water polo team, the defending CIF Division 6 champion, is off to a fast start this season.

Coach Ed Carrera’s team won the platinum division at the Corona Invite.

“The boys played really well considering the temperature,” said Carrera. “I believe our depth is a big advantage for us.  We also have great leadership from our seniors Tate Fitzgerald and Ryan Goldstone. 

The Saints won the opener 18-10.

Freshman Julian Amakasu led the team with five goals and six assists. Mark Dipinto, a sophomore, scored four goals and notched one assist. Junior Jonathan Dipinto had two goals and five assists. Palmer MacBeth, a freshman, had four steals to lead the team.

Crean Lutheran then defeated Oak Park 15-8.

Amakasu led the team with seven goals and two assists. Mark Dipinto had three goals and one assist. Jonathan Dipinto, a junior, had two goals and three assists. Senior Ryan Goldstone had five saves in goal and led the team with seven steals.

Crean Lutheran then defeated Yucaipa  9-5. Mark Dipinto, Jon Dipinto, and Sean Parshin, a freshman, led with two goals each. Jonathan Dipinto led the team with three assists followed by Mark Dipinto and Amakasu with two each. Tate Fitzgerald led the Saints with five steals.

The Saints wrapped up the tournament with a 19-7 win over Temecula Valley. Freshman Palmer MacBeth led the team with five goals and two assists. Mark Dipinto had four goals and one assist. Amakasu had two goals and 4 assists. Palmer MacBeth and freshman Santana DelCastillo led the team with two steals each.

Earlier in the season, the Saints recorded a 14-12 upset win over University in overtime.

Palmer MacBeth and DelCastillo led the team with three goals each with Santana scoring two overtime goals and Palmer one in OT. Palmer also had four assists to lead the team.

“Ryan Goldstone had five big saves to keep us in the game including a huge one in overtime,” said assistant coach Ryan Tunstall.
