Corona del Mar High School safety/wide receiver Tommy Griffin committed to play Division 1 college football at Cal Poly (San Luis Obispo) Monday after entertaining more than 10 offers, Sea Kings Coach Dan O’Shea said Tuesday.

The 6-2, 181-pound Griffin, a key player on last year’s CIF state championship team, is the second Sea King to commit to Cal Poly. Earlier, offensive lineman Jake Trachtman commmited to Cal Poly.

Griffin had a key interception late in the state title game to seal a 35-27 victory over Serra.

Griffin, a senior, will be one of the top players for the Sea Kings. The season is scheduled to begin in January 2021.

“They got a heck of a player in Tommy; he had 10 plus offers or so, Tommy is a three-year starter for us and All-CIF last year,” O’Shea said. “He made the final interception in the state title game vs. Serra High School to complete the 16-0 season.”

O’Shea said that Griffin will leave as the best safety in the program’s history.

San Jose State and UC Davis were also interested in Griffin, O’Shea said.

“He broke a couple of hearts, we think he is a Pac-12 guy and where things are right now, he’s put on about 15 pounds and grown two inches,” O’Shea said. “So he’s so much bigger and so much faster this year. The Pac-12 coaches said, ‘coach, he’s right there but we can’t pull the trigger until we see him live this year.'”

“So, there may be some interest down the road, but he just became so comfortable with the idea of going to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, they have a new coach from Cal (Beau Baldwin) who was the offensive coordinator for our Chase Garbers (former CdM quarterback), the quarterback up there and (he liked) the idea of being part of a program that is re-starting and rebuilding and building new facilities.”

Two other Sea Kings: defensive end and center Thomas Bouda (Army) and tight end Scott Giuliano (Harvard) also announced their college commitments earlier this year.
