It was a memorable day one year ago when six high school baseball and softball teams from Orange County went for CIF championships and five brought home titles at three different venues in Southern California.
The day was Saturday, May 18, 2019 and fans following those teams will always remember it.
Godinez High’s softball team made the most of its first CIF finals appearance. The Grizzlies, coached by Edward Medina, became the first softball team from the Santa Ana Unified School District to win a CIF title, defeating El Segundo 15-1 in the Division 4 title game.
After that game, Cypress High’s softball team rallied to capture a 2-1 victory over South Torrance to win the Division 2 title. It was the fourth CIF title for Cypress.
Then, the focus shifted to four CIF baseball finals, two at Dodger Stadium and two at UC Riverside.
At Dodger Stadium, Santa Margarita defeated Norco 1-0 in 12 innings to win the Division 2 crown, the second CIF baseball title for the school.
Then Cypress won its third CIF title and first Division 1 crown defeating Harvard Westlake 2-0 behind the outstanding pitching of Brett Wozniak and Cameron Repetti.
At UC Riverside, Kennedy won its first CIF title in 30 years, defeating Sonora 7-1 in the Division 4 championship game. A large contingent of Fighting Irish fans were on hand. Coach Tom Monahan’s team was led by the strong pitching of Wyatt Johnson.
Later that night, Costa Mesa’s bid for its first CIF title since 1962 ended when rallied for a 9-7 victory in the Division 6 championship.
It was definitely a day that fans of these teams will remember for a long time.
We think it deserves a second look, so here are the stories and photos:
