OC Sports Zone: Community First

CdM, Cypress, Pacifica, and Fullerton capture wins in CIF baseball playoffs; final scores

CORONA DEL MAR 2, BISHOP AMAT 1 (9 innings): The Sea Kings, an at-large team from the Sunset League, won at home Friday in a CIF Division 3 playoff opener against the Del Rey League champion.

Stevie Jones pitched seven innings, allowing one earned run and striking out 10 for CdM. Will Chavez pitched two innings in relief to earn the win. JJ Haley scored a run on a passed ball and Charlie Kaster scored on an error to lift the Sea Kings, who poured out onto the field after the game to celebrate the win.

Coach Kevin McCaffrey’s CdM (15-13) team plays at Fullerton Tuesday in the second round.

CYPRESS 8, OAKS CHRISTIAN 2: The Centurions won to stay alive in the pool play Division 1 playoffs. Tate Belfanti (four innings, four hits, eight strikeouts) earned the win and Nick Nelson (four strikeouts in three innings) got the save. Noah Johnson was 3 for 5 with a double and two RBI, Jae-Ho Park was 3 for 3 with two RBI and Tyler Vladic was 2 for with two runs scored, a walk and a stolen base.
Cyupress hosts Sierra Canyon Tuesday.

PACIFICA 7, CHINO HILLS 0: Cade Tessier pitched six innings allowing one hit and striking out five. Mau’u was 2 for 4 with a run scored, Robert Anoba 2 for 3 with two runs scored and a double, Anthony Rodriguez 2 for 3 with three RBI, and Raiden Futami 1 for 2 with two runs scored and two RBI and Brody Jakel 1 for 3 with an RBI.

Pacifica (16-12) is home Tuesday vs. Agoura.

FULLERTON 5, SAN JUAN HILLS 3: The Fullerton Indians won Friday’s Division 3 baseball opener at San Juan Hills. The Indians’ win was due in large part to their clutch hitting and, more importantly, their dominant pitching.

Fullerton (15-13) moves on to host Corona del Mar in the second round Tuesday.

Starting pitcher Declan Fitzgerald was masterful on the mound for Fullerton only giving up one earned run throughout his seven complete innings. Fitzgerald also racked up eight strikeouts while only surrendering two hits and walking just one batter.

Third baseman Luke Gonzales led Fullerton at the plate going 2 for 3 with a walk, two doubles and three RBI.

Fullerton leadoff hitter Sammy Chacon provided a spark at the top of the line-up going 2 for 4 with two singles and a stolen base. Senior left fielder Ronnie Martinez also lifted Fullerton offensively with two hits including an RBI single in the second inning.

Calin Williams was 3 for 4 with a double and Evan Terrazas 2 for 4.

San Juan Hills (16-13) got a boost offensively from pinch-hitter Cash Meyer, who got hit by pitch then stole second base in his first plate appearance in the fifth inning. He also hit an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Shortstop Brodie Corpuz went 1 for 3 with a single and a run scored in the bottom of the first inning for San Juan Hills.
