Bolsa Grande’s boys basketball team held off a late charge by Segerstrom to capture a 47-42 victory over the Jaguars in the Santa Ana Garden Grove Four City Classic Wednesday night at Santa Ana.
The Matadors (1-1) continue tournament play on Friday, but because of point differential in the combined games, Segerstrom advances to the championship semifinals Thursday at 5 p.m. at Santa Ana. Bolsa Grande moves on to face Garden Grove Friday at 6 p.m.
Bolsa Grande jumped out to a 23-4 lead in the second quarter and led 30-14 at halftime before Segerstrom (1-1) battled back late.
“We have so many first timers on varsity, so every chance we have to give them some more minutes is going to help us out and this was a good win for us and hopefully we can build on it. If we can play hard, good things will happen,” said Bolsa Grande Coach Todd Halbreich. “Even if we lose good things will happen if we play hard.
“They were very motivated, they hit some shots and they played very good defense.”
Mo Abdulhakim led Bolsa Grande with 13 points. Randy Do scored nine points and Matt Nguyen had eight points.
Brandon Silva scored 15 points and Othoniel Torin added 11 for Segerstrom.
The Jaguars, afer a slow start, battled back in the final minutes. Silva hit a 3-pointer with 39 seconds left and one free throw the next trip down to cut the lead to 45-42.
But Abdulhakim hit two free throws with 29 seconds left and then the Matadores forced a turnover to preserve the win.
