OC Sports Zone: Community First

Beckman, Trabuco Hills, Uni, Laguna Beach, Segerstrom, Santa Ana and Valencia win

Beckman’s baseball team improved its record to 3-2 with a 4-1 victory over Apple Valley Monday at Apple Valley in the Chino Tournament.

Hayden Zweig pitched 5 1/3 innings, scattering seven hits and striking out three. Nick McLain got the save, striking out three.

McLain and Jakob Guardado homered for Beckman. McLain had three RBI and Guardado also doubled. 

“We’re still figuring out how to score runs,” said Beckman Coach Kevin Lavalle. “This team has a lot of talent and potential, and thankfully our pitching has been excellent. I’m encouraged by what I see right now because this team is learning how to win.”

Trabuco Hills 5, Corona del Mar 0: The Mustangs (3-1) recorded a victory in the Newport Elks Tournament. Mason Molina and Daniel Gaggiano combined to pitch a one-hitter. Junior Justin Crosbie led the offense with three hits. Crosbie was 3 for 3 with a run scored; Jack Korthals was 2 for 4 with a run scored and Caleb Oddo was for for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Molina pitched the first four innings, striking out eight and allowing one hit. Gaggiano then pitched three innings, striking out four and not allowing a hit.

University 8, Estancia 6: University won its third in a row out of the gate with a win in the Newport Elks Tournament. Rahul Pal had two hits and two RBI, Ryan Shaw had two RBI and Adam Axtell scored three runs.

Laguna Beach 11, Hemet 0: Four Laguna Beach pitchers teamed up for two-hit shutout. Eric Silva, Brooks Hogenauer, Nick Bonn and Shea Blanchard were on the mound for the Breakers, striking out 11. Silva struck out five in 2 2/3 innings. Coach Jeff Sears’ Laguna Beach team is off to a 5-0 start.

Segerstrom 7, La Habra 6: Segerstrom captured a win in the Newport Elks Tournament Monday, jumping out to a 7-0 lead after two innings. Kenneth Cabada pitched a perfect final two innings to earn the victory for Segerstrom (3-3).

Adrian Villegas was 1 for 3 with a double and two RBI, Anthony Patino was 1 for 2 with a double and an RBI and Nick Ochoa was 1 for 2 with a double and two stolen bases.

Valencia 11, Cerritos 5: Sophmore Robbie Blank had the final RBI of the day for the Tigers.

Santa Ana 11, Los Amigos 0: Senior Vincent Tinajero threw a no-hitter for the Saints. (Please click here for the story)
