The Patriots (2-0) did plenty right, but there are areas they can improve on in the eyes of their head coach.
“We dropped two sure touchdown passes and we had two turnovers,” said Beckman Coach Marcello Giuliano. “You’re not going to win many games like that, but credit to our kids for regrouping at halftime and just bringing the right energy back out.”
Beckman’s defense bent, but didn’t break. Kai Nguyen and Josh Carter had interceptions for the Patriots.
“Our secondary had a really difficult task because they were faster at every receiver position,” Giuliano said. “The whole secondary had to do a great job of mixing up coverages. Super proud of them taking on that challenge and rising to the occasion.”
Jett Daviss led Beckman with 139 yards rushing while quarterback Jason Cheng passed for 112 yards and two touchdown passes. He had one interception and Beckman also turned the ball over on a turnover.
El Dorado (0-2) kept staying around though and cut the Beckman lead to 17-6 when Christopher Ruiz-Allen scored on a 2-yard TD run with 7:25 left.
But Beckman regained the momentum in the third quarter. Daviss scored on a 1-yard TD run late in the stanza to put the Patriots ahead 23-6.
Then Cheng connected with Aiden Fordyce on a 19-yard TD in the fourth quarter to put Beckman ahead 29-6. Beckman added insurance when Nolan Han scored from 19 yards out.
“It was just a really good team win even though we had a couple mistakes in the second half,” Carter said. “We really rallied back. It was an all-around good game by us. I’m really excited for what’s coming next.”
Beckman took a 3-0 lead on a 33-yard field goal by Alex Diego. Then Blake Parker hauled in a 44-yard TD pass from Cheng. Later, Cheng capped the Patriots first half scoring with a 4-yard run.
El Dorado quarterback Riess Petti passed for 204 yards and Aramonte Schneider hauled in six catches for 152 yards.
