Beckman’s boys basketball team used its size up front and a solid defense to defeat Woodbridge 56-37 in a Pacific Coast League game at Woodbridge Friday night.
The Patriots (10-10, 2-2) were led by Ethan Bozzo, who scored 11 points, Shervin Ghazimorad who had nine points and Jake Morrison and Duwon Kim, who had eight points each. Bozzo also grabbed 10 rebounds.
Woodbridge (3-15, 1-1) was led by Steven Mimpaya with 13 points, Eli Hill with seven points and Nygle Williams with six points.
“I thought we played a good first quarter,” said Beckman Coach John Goins. “And the second half came together pretty well. They’re big and they’re actually more athletic than we are. So we struggled keeping them off the offensive glass.
“But on the defensive end, I thought we excecuted really well. Offensively, they threw a bunch of different looks at us and it kept us off balanced. Luckily, I got some decent guard play and I have big guys who can cause you to do things. This is always a tough place to play and they’re always such a great defensive team. I’m happy to come out with this. I thought we did our job tonight.”
Beckman led 29-20 at halftime then extended the margin in the third quarter outscoring Woodbridge 17-10.
“Tonight, obviously, we didn’t play well,” said Woodbridge Coach John Halagan. “Credit to Beckman, they were just more on point. They were better than us tonight. We’ve got to figure out a way to solve that going forward.
“But I love coaching this group. It’s been tough on us from a won-loss standpoint, but we played really well against Irvine and we will pick ourselves up and dust ourselves off.”
