That was the day that five Orange County high school squads: three baseball teams and two softball squads captured CIF championships and another came close in its title quest.
OC Sports Zone was thrilled to cover all six finals with stories and photos and we thought it fitting to take a look at how the day went from the start.
There were lots of smiles and dog piles and plenty of happy players, coaches and fans in Orange County.
Cypress celebrated a softball and baseball title on the same day. In baseball, two Empire League teams: Cypress and Kennedy won crowns in their respective divisions.
It started at 9:30 a.m. Saturday when Godinez defeated El Segundo 15-1 in the CIF Division 4 softball game at Deanna Manning Stadium.
The Grizzlies became the first softball team from the Santa Ana Unified School District to win a CIF title, and no one was happier than Coach Edward Medina.
Then, about a half hour later, Cypress High’s softball team began its quest for a CIF Division 2 title and accomplished it with a 2-1 victory over South Torrance. A number of the Cypress baseball players were on hand for that game and a large contingent of Cypress fans cheered the Centurions on.
Then, baseball took center stage with two games at the prestigious Dodger Stadium and two others at UC Riverside.
In the first game at Dodger Stadium, Santa Margarita went 12 innings to defeat Norco 1-0 in the Division 2 title game to capture its second CIF title.
In the second game at Dodger Stadium, Cypress defeated Harvard Westlake 2-0 behind the outstanding pitching of Brett Wozniak and Cameron Repetti. The Centurions got to do one last dog pile after winning their third CIF title and first Division 1 crown.
At UC Riverside, Coach Tom Monahan’s Kennedy team won its second CIF title with a 7-1 victory over top-seeded Sonora behind a strong pitching performance of Wyatt Johnson and a large turnout of Fighting Irish fans who celebrated outside the field with their team. It was the first CIF baseball title in 30 years for Kennedy.
Earlier at UC Riverside, Rio Hondo Prep defeated Costa Mesa 9-7 in the Division 6 final for its first CIF title. The Mustangs had finished third in the Orange Coast League but Coach Kevin Chavez’s team put together quite a run in its quest for a second CIF title baseball for the school.
